Super food vs regular food

Super food vs regular food

Are superfoods always the right choice for your health? Despite being a so-called “superfood" plenty of people hate KALE. But they still force it down even if they detest it. Is that necessary? Not really.  Context matters. Preferences matter. Goals matter.

Article by our guest fitness expert, Selver Ahmed (click here to read about her)

The claim is super foods are always the best choice when it comes to healthy eating.

The reality is eating healthy goes well beyond a nutritional label.

Rice vs quinoa: Both grains can be good choices depending on your goal. For example, after a heavy gym session I wouldn't eat quinoa because it's not easy to digest but I would love to eat it as lunch to keep fuller for longer.

Iceberg vs kale: Kale beats iceberg in nutrient content but iceberg is crunchier with a high water content and great in light salads, so it is a preferable option for many people.

Olive oil vs coconut oil: Olive oil beats coconut oil nutritionally and both can be considered superfoods. But don’t forget oil is a fat with a much higher calorie density than carbs and protein - 9 calories per gram. So when it comes to diet the choice depends on your overall fat intake allowance, on the way you cook and the taste you prefer.

Bananas vs blueberries: Despite bananas being high in carbs and sugar, they can be as healthy an option as blueberries.

How can “super” foods affect your goal, individual body, priorities, preferences and your current diet?

NO SINGLE FOOD WILL TRANSFORM YOUR DIET.

Pay attention to what food makes you feel good and what doesn't.

Don't be fooled by the label 'Super Food of the Month'.

Remember that supermarkets are trying to make money.

Quote of the week from Selver:

“Learn to be okay with people not knowing your side of the story. You don't have to prove anything to anyone. Rather focus on living your life and make the best of it no matter what situation you are in."

I hope you enjoyed reading this article and I hope it was as useful as the kale you buy and never eat...
