History of Hoops
Hoop earrings have been around as long as humans dating back to 2500 BC in Nibia, Africa. Hoop Earrings were also worn by ancient Greeks, Romans, Asians, & Egyptians. What began as a way to identify tribal members turned into a symbol of religion and power social status within societies.
Fast forward to 1922 and the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922 rebirthed the notion of gold hoop earrings symbolizing power and high social status. Hoop earrings were a signature look of the 1960's as they matched with clean, straight hair. During the 1970s hoops in silver, chrome, kinetic and tribal designs were popular. The 1980s pushed hoops earrings to the back burner in favour of jagged shaped jewellery and drops although they never went out of style.
Hoops continued to be popular amongst women of the 1990s and early 2000s thanks to hip hop culture and latino influence.
